We are here!!! Norway! The flight was amazing! We each got our own row and there were awesome TVs with tons of movies. So true to form I slept two hours and mostly binged on free movies! I kind of love the captive airplane time. Can't go anywhere... Just have to chill. So we landed in Oslo. Flying over green hills and changing fall colors and we went directly to catch our flight to Bergen. And now we're here!!! We took a 10 minute taxi ride ( worth $64- this place is crazy expensive! ) to our Airbnb place. Stashed our gear and headed out for some dinner and groceries. I love going to the grocery store in other countries! True to European style. It smelled like a yummy bakery and had tons of great chocolate :) It rained pretty hard as we walked home and we were walking up hill so we arrived wet and sweaty. I was for sure having mission flash backs. So a little about the group. I'm here with bestie Christi Costello and Kelly McBride... The Irish Canadian. Its a great group! So anyway, we are here and looking forward to a great adventure tomorrow exploring the fjords!

We've spent the last 2 days in my favorite city!

It was of course a whirlwind.... But one of my favorite things to do there is wander anyway... So I was very happy. Plus I got to see some of my favorite people! Charlie and her husband James came to down and I saw Lauren and Loren and Charlie met up with us for dinner.... So many of my favorite things! Charlie has never done anything in London so we walked around and saw some of the classic sites and I think my favorite part of the day was that night when we all met up for dinner in a pub on the south bank. It was just so fun to sit and catch up with old friends. Since I've never spent a summer there I forgot that London is pretty far north so we left the pub at about 9pm and it was still twilight. It was totally magical to walk along the south bank at that time of day.

Then today Veda and I did our own girlie shopping on oxford street day. Which means we spent several hours in primark... Haha. We had a blast. We also got to go see Selfridge's. Actually yesterday as we were walking through leister square we saw the redhead man who plays in the show Mr Selfridge's.... Lauren is the best at celebrity spotting! We bounced around the city to a couple other city highlights before heading back to the airport for our flight to Iceland. Mostly it was just really fun to spend so much time with Veda. We had a great day!! Can't wait to come back here!!

It was totally awe inspiring. Made me feel "how great Thou art". The crazy thing is that the waterfall is on one side of q narrow gorge so the path you walk to see it is probably 100 yards from the falls..... Only thing is that all that spray then comes shooting back up in huge clouds. So as we walked down the path we were basically in this intense down up downpour! Someone else described it as a river backwash downpour. I got 100% drenched. It was the craziest " rainstorm " ever. Since its the wet season and the water is high we couldn't actually see most of it. Still totally stunning.

We also walked into Zambia over this huge bridge over the gorge. We watched some people bungee jumping. I could have done it for free actually.... But I just really have no desire to do it. It was fun to just spend a little time with the rest of the group too as we had to say goodbye to them this afternoon. I've met a lot of really amazing people that have enriched my life. Especially the Africans. Sam and Midia and brother Godi were so amazing.

There is the list from this evenings excursion. We all hopped in a big open safari truck and packed our braai stuff which included steaks , sausages, garlic bread and tin foil veggies. We headed out into a safari park and set up a campfire and started cooking our food.... Well corn cooked and we watched in awe. We arrived before the moon rose so we saw a billion stars. We had all almost finished our meal when all of a sudden we heard very close this loud braying sound. We didn't know what it was but Corn just said calmly.... Everyone get in the truck.... Man, we were obedient! We all scurried into the truck and Corn got her spot light and shone it on a large female elephant. She just kept shining the light on her and saying easy now and move on now. She kind of did a mock charge a couple times. And then this whole herd of elephants appeared in the background and there were two elephants braying at each other. After about 5 minutes they got their pack together and moved on. Corn said that it was a pack with lots of young elephants so the matriarch was very protective. She said that the wind was blowing away from us so they probably couldn't hear us and then when she did she was threatened. So....my heart was beating pretty fast.... But it was so amazing to see them up close and hear them braying!!! What an incredible experience! After we packed up and drove off we watched the orange moon rise through the trees and over a herd of giraffes.... Wow this place is amazing!!!

You could hear the roar of the falls from our room. We took off early in the morning to cross the boarder into Botswana. We met Cornelia there who is Rachel's cousin. To get us through faster Rachel told them about how we were trying to hurry to church. So Rachel told them which church and they asked us to sing for them....so we sang I am a child of God and God be with you til we meet again. It was a really lovely thing to feel the spirit strongly in a border crossing office. We got to church about 30 minutes late. It is held in a small rented house. There were probably 20 people in the room.... Mostly children. I love church in other countries. It was wonderful to sing with the saints there and hear all our voices fill that small space. My favorite meeting was relief society. We talked about a past conference talk about trials. Nothing is more universal. We didn't talk about anything revolutionary.... We live, pass through trials, trials are for our own good and we must keep our eye on the goal which is heaven.... But the spirit there was fantastic. The kind you find so prevalently on the forefront of the church where having a strong testimony is all these people have. Cornelia was teaching and she shared her conversion story. She is the cousin of Dean who is Rachel's husband and he gave her a book of Mormon one time before she left to go back to Botswana. She read it and gained a testimony and so she called Rachel's dad and said she wanted to be baptized! Since there wasn't a church within a thousand miles she flew to Harare and received the discussions and was baptized all in the course of a few days and then she moved back to Botswana. For 5 years she was the whole church. She would fly yo Harare three or four times a year to attend church. Then two couples who were members moved to her town and she met them by some random "coincidence". They decided that they needed to work on getting more members and so she started with her maid and her children. They would go out door to door. She took the call even without a badge!!! And 5 years later they have a rented building and a group. Not quite a branch yet. Anyway it was amazing to learn from a real latter day pioneer. I cannot imagine how hard that must be. Such a pleasure to have met her and learn from her. Such a pleasure to go to church here!

Unfortunately because of some village politics we were unable to do any medical or dental work :( thank goodness for Rachel who is around to negotiate all of that. So I guess in the past there had been some nervousness within their village about Rachel's humanitarian group and Satanism... She said that last time she came they had thrown everything away! Anyway, she wanted to make sure we really emphasized that we were a group associated with Christ. So we all gathered together.... There were several hundred of them.... Mostly school kids and they sang us this beautiful native song. ( they don't speak shona here but a lesser known native tongue called Tonga.) And then we sang God be with you til we meet again for them and prayed with them and then did a massive distribution. We were in the school house and I was just in charge of sorting out the clothes. It was really hot and kind of mindless manual labor and it felt good to work hard. I was glad I was not the one handing things out though..... That was stressful the other day. We probably handed out clothing, blankets and school supplies for about 2 hours once we got organized and when we were done we all met again outside and they thanked us for coming and this time their leader prayed for us in return. After the prayer we just got rushed with all these people that wanted to shake our hands and say thank you and God bless you. Closest I will ever come to bring a celebrity. It was really nice to connect with them individually for just a minute and to look into their eyes and just smile at each other. I still don't really like the idea of hand outs but these people do seem to be legitimately grateful. So thus ends our humanitarian work... Tonight we head on to Victoria falls and Botswana for a little tourism time. I don't feel like I helped much but I guess something is better than nothing. Still to early to process all this and how it will affect me in the long run. I'll get to that later..... For now it's time to enjoy all the beauties of Africa!

I would say that we had an epic road trip today. We left gachi gachi this morning at 10 am and arrived here back on lake Karibba at midnight. All day long we drove/4wheeled over dirt roads and stopped each time we would see someone and give out wither clothes or school supplies or little toys to the kids. We stopped at one little group of huts and encountered a few kids. We gave them each a few items of clothing which they were grateful for. As we were getting ready to leave the oldest boy came out pushing his disabled brother in a wheelchair. He told us that he cared for his 3 disabled siblings. Being disabled in America is tough.... But it has got to be so much harder here! We left him with clothes for his siblings and atmit ( fortified flour for malnutrition) ams they took down his information so they could help him in the future. The take away from the day is that these are happy people. They have very little but are very quick to smile and to laugh. Just like what you always hear. Africa is turning out to be exactly like what people tell me. I really loved seeing all those happy faces today! Tonight we are staying on a house boat on the lake in preparation for a clinic tomorrow. So excited to sleep!!! We pulled in at midnight ( our poor driver Sam) had dinner ( the first real meal of the day) at one and now off to bed!

Denisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05792988366401486393noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198139060826808477.post-11845053772016090392014-05-21T12:21:00.009-06:002014-10-09T21:48:48.773-06:00Gache Gache
So this morning we got up at 4 am and packed up and got on the road. I realize now why we couldn't do this drive at night.... We have basically been 4 wheeling for the last 3 hours! Very fun! In our car we have been jamming to all my lion king music so its been a fun ride. We just got to this village on lake Karibe and are getting ready to set up the clinic. Luckily we are staying here for the night....so hopefully I'll get a little more sleep.... Only got about 4 hours last night.

So...fast forward 12 hours. I've just eaten a freshly caught fish and chips dinner and am in my room at the Eco lodge under the mosquito net with my citronella candle burning. Super excited to sleep! Clinic today was pretty busy. It was held in a local health clinic in a fishing village on the lake. There were tons of people there so it was pretty chaotic. I did a little medical work and mostly spent the afternoon helping Angie with a distribution. We had two big "bales" of clothing and we handed it out to people. At first it felt pretty organized but as it wore on they got more unorganized and bunched up....first time around we tried to give them something that would fit them and then towards the end when the line was coming back around again we were just giving them any item. Angie says they all trade things around anyway. By the time we finished that people were pretty rowdy and crowding.... It was interesting though, the whole time we were handing things out, people were kind of pushing and demanding and then just as soon as we finished they all stood in a circle and sang and danced and were very pleasant. Not sure if that seems to me the best way to help people but it was certainly a good experience. It took us a long time to clean up and get ready to come back so in the dusk of the African sun we had a mini dance party outside the car....loved it !

I handed out pills and watched a little. Tooth extraction is gross! I actually got woozy at one point and had to sit down for a while. Funny that something like teeth extraction would get to me...eeewww. Anyway, while we were holding the clinic in a little school room we saw a bunch of baboons running around outside. Mischevious little bugger's....at one point we left some car windows open while we were standing by them to leave and one jumped from the clinic roof into an open car window and stole some oranges.... Funny that no matter where you see them.... Monkies have the same personality :) By 2 we were on the road again driving through the national park on to our next destination. As we drove we saw lots of impalas, some storks and even a huge African elephant!!! So amazing!!

So we got on the road later than expected and the gorge we have to pass to be to our next destination is not safe to drive at night so Rachel called in a favor and we are at a safari resort home on lake Carribe right now! Just took a dip in the pool, had some amazing fire grilled steaks for dinner and now I'm headed to bed under a mosquito net on a real bed!! Loving it!

Denisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05792988366401486393noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198139060826808477.post-9237517978160117622014-05-21T12:21:00.005-06:002014-10-09T21:48:40.414-06:00Camping on the Zambezi
This trip just got a lot crazier.... We left the clinic this afternoon and drove/4wheeled for 6 hours over crazy dirt roads through a wildlife park to the banks of the Zambezi river. We can see Zambia on the other side of this huge river. It's a full moon and there is fresh elephant dung in the camp and we can't go to the bathroom alone because there are hyenas roaming around. Frogs jump out of the toilet every time I flush (but I can flush the toilet!) And there is a hippo right down the embankment that keeps calling out and tons of crocodiles in the river. I'm praying that as Rachel said....nothing will attack our tent! I'll be saying some fervent prayers tonight.

.... Well....fast forward 6 hours. I fell asleep in one second. I was awake for about an hour during the night and just listening to so many different animal sounds. I wish I had the SoundHound for African animals app or something. Then we all woke up this morning to two lions roaring...one on the Zimbabwe side and the other answering from Zambia. So we all got up to watch the sunrise. So the sunrises in lion king... No joke... It was the most incredible sunrise I have ever seen!!! And watching it on the banks of the river while we watched a herd of hippos out in the middle of the river. Just the most amazing morning ever!!

Denisehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05792988366401486393noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198139060826808477.post-35681646227447829442014-05-21T12:21:00.003-06:002014-10-09T21:48:30.222-06:00Angwa clinic
I woke up early this morning due to my never snoring. Ugh... But I did get a c incredible african sunrise. I also got to walk down and see the bush pump where they get their water. Then the local understood me around the clinic. Talk about a jack of all trades! She does it all! Treats malaria. Treats hiv. Delivers babies! She also told me about some of the barriers to getting healthcare. I guess they are afraid of her because she's not from this area. They also have to come from 49 different villages and travel many miles to get here. They have to worry about wild animals! Some of them are farmers now and sleep in their fields to protect from baboons during the day and elephants at night. Which leaves them exposed to malaria. She said they have treated over 1400 cases in april of malaria. They do handout nets that many people use in for fishing. Education is also a problem due to traveling long distances and fear wild animals. So nutrition and poverty are huge problems. Feeling more and more like I will be the 1 learning hear and not so much the 1 helping. I think it will be an amazing day!

We started at about 730 and just finished at 3....I'm so glad....so tired. It was a pretty frustrating day.... I don't know anything about what diseases they have. Malaria, HIV, TB, malnourishment.... I've never dealt with these things before. So I relied heavily on Marvelous, the clinic nurse here for help...which didn't help me to feel that i was at all helping. And the other questions people had were almost all I have pain in my .__________. So I really don't feel that my "expertise" I was helpful at all. But I guess something is better than nothing. As we left we sang I am a child of God for them and they asked me to say a prayer. I'm very tired, but I feel like it was a good day. So we just loaded in the car and have 200 km of bumpy roads until we get to our next destination mana pools national park.

She is a 3rd generation Zimbabwean who runs the non profit eyes 4 Zimbabwe with the help of her family. We went to the ministry of health for the dentists to sign paperwork and then a few errands and on to the home of Rachel's family. Beautiful place... With a lovely shower! Felt so good to be clean! We ate and finished up packing and then loaded into 3 trucks and got back in the car for more travel. 6 hours from Harare into the bush. At least half was over bumpy dirt roads. The sunset did not disappoint....but by the time we finally arrived it was midnight here which is 1pm at home which means I've not layed down in 54 hours!!! Yikes! I'm excited to get down to work tomorrow!

The drive itself was beautiful and walking through Richmond and by the Thames was magical. We got a roast dinner with a view of the river. Hannah came to see me which was amazing! I love that girl! We got to chat for a while and walked along the river. Then of course we were running late to get back to the airport which ended in a running goodbye hug for Hannah as we chased our bus.... Haha...lots of London memories of chasing after busses :) this place is so charming... Makes me want to come again and again!

So were now headed into the past. We may have acquired a few things along our path....haha. We literally consumed southeast Asia. 10 hours to Vancouver, quick layover then 3 more hours to lax. We got up to go to the fish market at 315, 27 hours ago....feeling perky:) I just hopped on a bus to union station to catch a train to san Diego. All in all this will be about a 36 hour day or so. Just said bye to Daren.....sad to be all on my own. Love traveling with D and Justin too. Another wonderful adventure completed. Lots of great memories. So glad it turned out so well! Reality will be nice but bittersweet.

We got off the subway and saw the sign right there....turns out it was just the church office building. Someone inside showed us the way to the temple a few blocks away. Its in the same neighborhood as lots of the embassy's so the neighborhood was beautiful and looked very affluent. The temple was of course beautiful and the little tiny grounds had lots of blooming flowers. Across the street was an incredible park. Lots of people walking their perfect little dogs and running there. There was also a big coy pond with tons of little turtles sunning on the rocks. So nice to get out of city and into nature for a second.

Still blown away each time we head into the totally crazy subway stations. We walked by a gas station where there are no pumps and the hose just hangs from the ceiling (very innovative) saw some super tall crazy buildings in our wanderings, and on the side of one of them was this massive clock. Everywhere we go I'm blown away.

Only the first 120 people are permitted to watch the auction thst begins at 530. We got there and they gave us each a blue vest and then we sat and waited forever. We sat and talked with Dan from Portland who is a neurosurgery resident/base jumper....very interesting to chat with him. So eventually they came and filed us into this huge warehouse where we watched them auction off these massive tuna for the sushi restaurants. Quite a bit of theatrics and hand gestures to it all. It seemed like the New York stock exchange of tuna. Very interesting to witness. Don't thing I've ever in my life seen fish that big! When the auction was over they filed is out through this crazy busy market with little carts driving all around and past this massive pile of Styrofoam they were grinding up and back to the sleeping streets.....just another totally crazy thing about this city!

On the eve of the end of the trip I've just finished the love saga of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. Such a tragedy!! Besides the love story, it was very interesting to read about all these people in the context of pre and post civil war. Interesting to see it from the perspective of the confederate army. I feel like there are always two sides to every story and two sides to each side. Praise and blame to be placed on each. I loved the swarthy captain Butler the best, what a charming, witty character. Can't wait to watch the movie again! Totally worth dragging that huge novel all over Asia.

Pretty much everywhere only takes cash, which is only a problem when you've run out of money and none of the arm's in the area accept MasterCard....ugh! 7-11 was the only place we could find that would take visa so we dined on the curb in front of 7-11. Classy as usual :) it was all good and well until I spilled half my fancy ramen bowl in my purse and then it started to rain....then it turned into a bonafide giggle-fest and memory. It was actually a pretty tasty meal. On our way back to the hostel we checked out a karaoke place but a Russian kid explained to us that it pretty much only had Japanese songs there and it wasn't like karaoke place in the states, you just rent a room and a microphone and go to town. Daren really wanted to sing me some songs but we decided we could just look up some songs on YouTube at home....haha.

Again, just very interesting to wander around and take in the sights and sounds of the city. And we found some fun funky Tokyo fashion as well. Don't let Darens face fool you....he was loving shopping time (half that stuff is his :) we took a break and sat outside this cool temple for a bit as well. Nice to escape the chaos for a minute.

First of all the train system is insane. Over the course of the day I've accumulated 3 different train maps. All equally confusing. We saw a noodle vending machine. So what you do is outside you pay and push the button of the noodle bowl you want the go inside and they serve it....innovative. we wandered into a gaming place lined with what looked like slot machines. It was some kind of pin ball gambling game....what? Then saw this place selling huge red octopus tentacles. And they are huge on cleanliness here....see that sink right below the payment desk at the mini mart. So many crazy foreign things!

A very authentic experience. When it came it was my worst nightmare....sketchy meat all over the top. I didn't look and followed the addage I learned on my mission.....chew twice and swallow. Turns out it wasn't bad at all. It was sliced super thin so no chewy parts.....thank goodness. Then we took the train to Harajuku street, which is the heart of the fashion district here in Tokyo. They had a huge mall we went into with about 6 floors of shops and on the top was this beautiful rooftop garden and sitting area. We sat and had a snack and enjoyed relaxing. This cheeky little bird tried to swipe my scone....nope! Like a Japanese squirrel :) then we walked through some of the smaller streets and shops. Found some unique ones. Cell phone cover shops and dog clothing shops mixed in with clothing shops. I must say that I really like all the men's fashions I've seen here but the women's are all a little too frilly for my liking. Was really fun to wander the streets and window shop though.

I was very sad to leave Bali....could have happily spent a lot more time there....ill be back some day! Caught a 3 hour flight to Kuala Lumpur. We had a five hour layover so we figured we venture into town for a bit. Once we got through immigration and customs we talked to the taxi people and realized we were an hour from downtown which didn't make it worth it so I did get a Malaysian stamp in my passport but only made it as far as the sidewalk outside the airport :)....it was stunning...really :) so we hung inside and ate another terrible meal at the only coffee shop that would take visa in the airport, discovered a whole bunch of fruit we had never even heard of before at a juice stand. Played 21 AND 31 (pretty sure Daren made that one up) ....for the record I beat him heartily at 21 (yessss) and also discovered that Daren's beard is long enough to stash stuff in (eeeww) Daren and I are both reading epic novels that we like as well (me- gone with the wind and him -counte of Monte Christo) so the time passes quickly. So we walked quite a ways out onto the tarmac to our budget airline and then boarded a 7 hour flight (no tv's -thank goodness I like reading) to Tokyo. Made it with no problems except 2 loud kicking kids behind us that we were lucky enough to escape. As expected this country is spotless - nigh unto Germany. I've never seen so.many options at a toilet so I had to document (bidde front, bidde back, how much water, dryer) I had a hard time finding the flush button. Got some good food finally and headed for the subway to our hostel. My jaw almost dropped when I saw the map. Probably a hundred lines and maybe a thousand stops! Made the London underground look like a toy.....luckily they are helpful and efficient like German's too so there was an attendant to help us find our way and get tickets and a helpful citizen that helped us make it on the right train. By the time we got on the train it was after midnight and we were stunned at how it filled up as if it had been a 6pm train. Looks like they're pretty hard workers. The guy across the way struggled the whole way....didn't even fight his exhaustion and his neighbors just had to keep elbowing him off their shoulders....pretty funny to watch. Anyways, I'm very excited to be here. It is a world of difference from what we left this morning!

On the way back we got dropped off near this amazing ocean Hindu temple called Tanah Lot. We thought we were pretty close so we got in a taxi and then sat in LA like traffic for an hour and 45 minutes!! Killer! We did make friends with our driver, Ketut. We finally got there after the sun set and ran out there just in time to catch the afterglow which was beautiful. So the temple is only accessible during low tide so we walked out and the Hindu priests had us wash our hands and face in holy water and then put some small pieces of rice on our forehead and put a plumeria flower in our ear. Then we could walk around and just enjoy the fading sunset. There were stairs up the backside so we started walking to the top and about 10 steps up was a gate and a do not enter sign....which is basically a "please enter here,Sir" sign for Daren so he checked it out quickly, there was a small hut on top is all. We found out later that there are poisonous snakes in the caves near there....yikes! Anyway, at this point we were starving and stopped at a local place to grab some food. No disrespect to the local "warung" (name for a local eatery) but this one literally gave me the worst meal of my recollection. Daren had fried weird chicken pieces and mine was a rice bowl with a slat flat worth of msg to the point I couldn't even finish it and Daren wouldn't either (that's pretty bad since he'll eat almost anything). Then we headed 30 minutes or so back to Kuta. Ketut was rocking some good tunes from a bunch of different countries and then some Michael Jackson came on and Katut and I sang "Heal the world" together...we bonded. So glad he was cool since we ended up being in his taxi for a solid 2 hours and 15 mins. Such a greay evening!
